Pastor’s Corner

In my devotions this morning I read this verse and then meditated on it a bit:

Prov. 20:24 “Man’s goings are of the Lord: how can a man then understand his own way?”

From that verse we see two very definite Bible Principles.

1. God is sovereign and He has power over every one of our lives.
2. Man is dependent on God, and in and of himself, man is helpless except as God leads and directs.

It seems the multitude today reject the second premise. They believe that man can solve his own problems—in fact he must solve his own problems and not need to depend on God. But the fact is that the more man tries to solve his own problems, the more complicated the problems become. We can see that in the works of our government and in individual lives who leave God out of the equation in living their lives.

The wonderful truth is that when we realize our “goings are of the Lord”, we have a strength to do the right things. We learn to rely entirely on Him. Jesus gave it to us very clear: “…for without Me, ye can do nothing.” [John 15:5 (b)] To many, that seems foolish. But God states, “For it is God which worketh in you to will and to do of His good pleasure.” (Philippians 3:13) I must admit there have been times in my life when I wondered why certain things were happening or working out as they were. But later I could look back and said, “The Lord was leading, and I did not realize it.” We see this acted out in the Bible when Abraham’s servant could say concerning Rebekkah whom he had just met, “I being in the way, the Lord led me.” (Genesis 24:27) Man”s goings are of the Lord, though we may not always understand them. Therefore we should always endeavor to live according to Proverbs 3:5-6:
“TRUST in the Lord with all thine heart; and LEAN NOT unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways ACKNOWLEDGE HIM, and He shall DIRECT THY PATHS.”

We had a day of blessing last Sunday as we met together at Harvest Baptist church. In the Evening Service we heard a message by Pastor Bart Janz telling of his struggles as a father while his son suffered from an accident and was in a debilitated state for 14 years. That message was a tremendous blessing to all who heard it. For Brother Janz, he realized “Man’s gongs are of the Lord.”

Pastor Josh has returned from his missions trip to Zambia. We heard from him Thursday night in our Mid-Week Service and he will preach again next Sunday in both services. We are anxious to hear his account of this Missions Trip to Zambia. Plan right now to be with us next Sunday. For the past two Sundays we have had snow which has kept some of our people from being able to come. It looks like there is snow in the forecast again so lets pray that we are able to have a good attendance this Sunday.

Don’t Forget—Our Valentine Dinner and Fellowship is this Saturday,February 20, at 6:00 P.M. The restaurant, Siena at the Courtyard, is located at 333 Perry St, right across from the Fire Station.

Viola Wall is back home again with the Head family. Willi is busy caring for both David and Viola.

Remember—Keep trusting with your confidence being only in the Lord.

Yours and His,

Ed Nelson

Dear Church Family,

What a beautiful to sight to look out at the landscape transformed by the white snow. As I look out the window preparing for tomorrow I can’t stop thinking about the sacrifice that Jesus made for me to make my sin as white as snow. I pray that you will begin thinking these thoughts today and prepare your heart for tomorrow’s service. We have a very special service planned tomorrow. Our singing will be focused on the sacrifice that Christ made for us on the cross. Maria Barta, one of our newest members, will be singing one of my favorite songs tomorrow, The Look (the lyrics for this song can be found at the bottom of this post). We will conclude the service with our Sacrifice Sunday Offering. In this offering you will be asked to place your financial, as well as time, sacrifice to Christ. It will be a wonderful time of focus on the work of our precious Savior.

I understand that the snow has made it difficult for many to get out; however, I believe that tomorrow’s service is extremely important for our church. We have a quick fellowship after the service tomorrow followed by a presentation of the plans for our new auditorium. If our church is going to move forward on this building project I believe it is vital for us all to be on the same page. We are planing the future of our church tomorrow. We spent the entire month of January building up to this service. I believe this is a critical time for our church body. We have the opportunity to gather together and focus on the sacrifice that Christ made for us on the cross. I pray that you will be here tomorrow to worship together with the body of Christ.

In Christ,

Pastor Josh

The Look

I saw one hanging on a tree in agony and blood

Who fixed His loving eyes on me as near His cross I stood

And never till my dying breath will I forget that look

It seemed to charge me with His death though not a word He spoke

My conscience felt and owned the guilt and plunged me in despair

I saw my sins His blood had spilt and helped to nail Him there

But with a second look He said “I freely all forgive

this blood is for your ransom paid; I died that you might live”

Thus while His death my sin displays for all the world to view

Such is the mystery of grace; it seals my pardon too

With pleasing grief and mournful joy my spirit now is filled

That I should such a life destroy yet live by Him I killed

CHORUS

Forever etched upon my mind is the look of Him who died

The Lamb I crucified and now my life will sing the praise

Of pure atoning grace that looked on me and gladly

took my place
