War of Words – Chapter 1 Study Guide – May 14, 2015

The first life group in Monument begins this Thursday night at 6:45pm. Call the church for directions to the Wilsons house for the first meeting. Read chapter 1 – God Speaks in your books in preparation for the first study. See the study guide attached to prepare for the discussion.

No matter where you live, no matter what you do every day, there is one thing that you do all day long. You talk. From the first “Goodnight, I gotta get some sleep,” you talk. In the bedroom, bathroom, hallway, and kitchen, in the car, the store, the factory, and the boardroom, you talk. To your spouse, children, friends, family, neighbors, and fellow workers, you talk. It is what human beings do, almost without interruption and often without a thought about how important it is to human life. The ability to communicate is one of the things that separate us from the rest of creation. We are people and we talk. We need to recognize how “wordy” our lives actually are.

Trellis and the Vine Chapter 10 Study Guide – March 19th

Below you will find the study guide for chapter 10 of Trellis and the Vine. We will be discussing this chapter on March 19th at pastor and Priscilla’s house for directions email Pastor Josh or call the church @ 720-733-9227.

Join us as we look into answering the question. “Where do pastors and other ‘recognized gospel workers’ come from?
The traditional answer—and it is a very good answer—is that they are called and raised up by God. Jesus asks his disciples to “pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest” (Luke 10:2). Evangelists, pastors and teachers are the gifts of the ascended Christ to his church (Eph 4:10-12).”1

“Let’s return to our inspired but overwhelmed pastor. He wants his church to become a training centre, and he wants to equip his people as ‘vine-workers’, but at the same time he is swamped with work—preaching, committees, pastoral crises, and all the rest. He has 130 people to take care of—regular attenders and various contacts and people on the fringe—and he goes through the exercise of listing them all down and assessing where they are up to in the ‘gospel growth’ process.

The problem is, he barely has time to spend with ten of them, let alone 130. How is he going to start ministering personally to this sort of number? How is he going to make progress in training them to be vine-workers?”1

Trellis and the Vine Chapter 8 Study Guide – February 26th

Below you will find the study guide for chapter 8 of Trellis and the Vine. We will be discussing this chapter on February 26th at pastor and Priscilla’s house for directions email Pastor Josh or call the church @ 720-733-9227.

We’ve come to the point in the flow of our argument where we need to pause and consider in more detail how the model of training and growth we are proposing collides with the reality of our existing church structures and models and practices. Because collide it will. By far the greatest obstacle to rethinking and reforming our ministries is the inertia of tradition—whether the long-held traditions of our denominations and churchmanship, or the more recent traditions of the church growth movement that have become a kind of unspoken orthodoxy in many evangelical churches.

We will get to the somewhat alarming proposition contained in this chapter’s title in due course, but first let’s look at two very common approaches to pastoral ministry, and then contrast them with the approach of this book. Now of course these common approaches are stereotypes, and cannot reflect the multi-faceted reality of ministry in all its variety. All the same, we trust that you can recognize the structures and tendencies reflected in the descriptions, and make adjustments for your own situation accordingly.
There are three approaches or emphases we wish to examine, which we will call:

• the pastor as service-providing clergyman
• the pastor as CEO
• the pastor as trainer.1

Below you will find the study guide for chapter 7 of Trellis and the Vine. We will be discussing this chapter on February 19th at pastor and Priscilla’s house for directions email Pastor Josh or call the church @ 720-733-9227.

“The biblical idea of training we’ve been exploring so far assumes that gospel work is a ‘growth industry’—that when the gospel is preached, and the Spirit is at work, then ‘growth’ is what happens.
We see this in Paul’s warm greeting to the Colossians:”1

“3   We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth,” (Colossians 1:3–6)

“Readers of this book may well fall into two categories. There are some for whom ‘training’ is something of a ministry buzzword. They assume they know what it means, and are accordingly either for it, against it, or just tired of hearing about it. There will be others for whom ‘training’ is something you do at the gym or at theological college or seminary, but who have never considered that ‘training’ ought to happen in the local church.
For the benefit of both groups, and all those in between, let’s pause to consider what ‘training’ really is in connection with Christian life and ministry.”1

“Is it really true, we often get asked, that the normal Christian life includes disciple-making? What about those who are barely hanging on to faith in Christ? Should we make them feel bad because they aren’t out there sharing the gospel or encouraging someone else in the faith or being ‘trained in ministry’? Aren’t we just making the average struggling Christian feel guilty? Or worse, aren’t we in danger of creating a new kind of legalism, where being ‘involved in disciple-making’ becomes the standard you have to meet to win the approval of your pastor (if not of God)? Do we end up creating two classes of Christians: the ‘keenies’ and the rest?”1 Chapter 5 dives into the book of Philippians with the goal of answering these questions to discover what the partnership between leadership and congregation should look like.

Chapter 4 askes the question, “Is every Christian a vine worker?” This is a vital question for every believer to answer. As you read through this chapter, I ask you to open your heart to God’s working. Listen to how God is calling you to minister in your life. I also encourage you to dream a little about a Christian culture that is consumed with the reading and study of the Word of God.
